Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institute of Brain Science

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institute of Brain Science (SHKIBS) is a non-independent legal entity affiliated with the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT). As the first Shenzhen-Hong Kong co-founded municipal basic research institution, it is jointly led by SIAT and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), cooperating with three other universities, and officially inaugurated in January 2019. Prof. Nancy Y. Ip, President of HKUST, serves as Honorary Director, and Prof. Wang Liping, Director of the Brain Cognition and Brain Diseases Institute (BCBDI) of SIAT, as Director.
SHKIBS initially focused on four research directions, which were further refined during the construction phase. Its core objectives are deciphering the brain’s fundamental principles and the pathogenesis of brain diseases, with key priorities on multi-species animal models and the construction of brain structural and functional atlases.
Since its establishment, SHKIBS has set up several research centers (including Shenzhen’s first Nobel Laureate Laboratory in Neuroscience). During the construction period, it published more than 900 SCI papers, filed over 1,000 patent applications (with more than 200 granted). Several representative achievements were published in top international journals.
Looking ahead, SHKIBS will deepen Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation, strengthen original innovation and industry-university-research collaboration, and build a global innovation highland in brain science and a model for Shenzhen-Hong Kong sci-tech cooperation.
